UPROCKING EXPERIENCES
A Day in the Life of an Old School Rocker (By Fred S. Rolle) Lower East Side An Uprocking Experience In 1968 there was a form of dance called Uprocking that was founded and established in the borough of Brooklyn and this extraordinary style of dance went over the Williamsburgh Bridge and onto the streets of the Lower East Side. This is my actual experience of how it was back in the days rocking on the streets and in the parks of the L.E.S. Behold the latino gangs and crews such as the "Dynamite Bros.","C.B.S", "Down By Law", "The Wild Boys", "Ghost Riders", and anybody that I missed my apologies due to the fact that I was too young to acknowledge anyone else.
Although Uprocking styles differed in style the flavor and dedication these brothers had surpasses the weak form of Bboy rocking today. This story is about Legends and Pioneers of the Uprock. Uprocking was a form of dance that expressed the very attitude the rocker was feeling when there were jams, parts of the park used to have different kinds of circles. Each circled displayed two rockers who showed their dance steps to the infamous drum beats coming from the speakers that blared the sounds of Jimmy Castor, James Brown and Baby Huey. As the dance mellowed down the pace would pick-up in the event that the dis moves would come in this form of Uprock was called "Burning".
Now burning is a word seldom used as well as an art practiced to me personally I think itÕs a lost art. Only those that possessed this skill of burning is the one's I will always look up to whether in Brooklyn, The LES, Bronx, Queens and so on I always give props to the older guys who are with God or are in the penal system and the true rockers like myself, King Uprock, Break Easy and all the other brothers who keeping the Uprocking flame lit. This piece is dedicated to my main man Jeff a.k.a. RKONE. This brother gave me the inspiration even till this day to continue to Rock. I remember back in 79 when I began to rock still wet behind the ears I met him at PS 188 park.
There would be no type of Uprock or Burning without the music to make things official, Peep these titles: 1. Castles In The Sky 2. Yellow Sunshine 3. Apache 4. Listen To Me 5. Last Night Changed It All 6. The Mexican 7. Disco Airline Flgt. 79 8. Melting Pot 9. Give It Up Turn It Loose 10. Bra 11. Drummers Beat 12. Sex Machine 13. Rock Creek Park 14. Shaft In Africa. So the list goes on.....These songs gave us the will and drive to go off. These are my accounts from growing up in the Lower East Side. Rock On! - Fred S. Rolle UPROCK LIVES FOREVER ! "FRED S.
